Book Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Sorry its been awhile guys. I have just been super busy and reading my book has not taken first priority in life lately. I mean that is understandable right? Anyway, I did finally finish the next book last night. Obviously nothing too deep or anything. I mean how deep can you get with Pride and Prejudice mixed with zombies? There aren’t going to be any life lessons there, that’s for sure. This was definitely just a fun read.

I love the Pride and Prejudice storyline. I have always enjoyed Jane Austen and have seen the six-hour long Pride and Prejudice from BBC as well as the Keira Knightly one. I also own both of them as well. There are times when I prefer P&P to my usual Sci-Fi or horror choices. So, the storyline is still great! The fact that they added in zombies, fuels my desire for romance as well as horror or whatever you classify zombies as. It added a nice little twist to the original storyline.

The zombie bits honestly did not add as much to the storyline as I was hoping. I mean it was most of the time just a little add here and there. Nothing too dramatic. I would’ve liked more zombie bits to be quite honest. If you are going to add zombies, add zombies. If not, just forget about it.

I loved it! It really was such a great read! Again, I love the original story line. The zombies did not take away from that at all, which was awesome. It wasn’t like they totally messed with the original, they just added in some zombies, so that was fun. I really enjoy watching the love between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth unfold. There came a point in the book where I couldn’t put the book down even though I knew what happened. I seriously read for about four hours when I got home last night from work. I just wanted to read what happened next even though I know it by heart. The fun part of reading a book after watching the movies is that you picture the movie (adding in zombies, of course) as you are reading.

The next book is: Christian Outdoor Leadership by Ashley Denton (one of our professors for our Masters program.)

In other news, I finished my pocket scarf. Pictures to come soon I promise. I took one with my phone but I need to take a picture with my camera now. Haha.

I also got accepted into Seminary for the spring! Yay! I was so excited when the admissions counselor called to tell me and then when I actually got the acceptance letter in the mail yesterday! I have been working to get this acceptance since about March so it was about time that I finally got accepted. Getting transcripts sent over to them. Them processing my application, etc. took wayyyyyy too long. But the Lord provides and I am off to get my Masters in Outdoor Leadership come Spring 2013. Whoohoo!

We finally got some furnishings for the apartment!!! Our books finally have a place to live, we have some seating in the living room (still no couch) and we have nightstands! Yay! It helps make everything look a little more put together and less cluttered. The nightstands needed some work, so we did that. The chairs and the TV stand/desk didn’t really need any work. They were in super good shape as it was so we left them as they were. It makes me so happy to be making a home for us. We are still keeping our eyes open for a smaller couch and a coffee table. But those are not necessary right away. So, first to show you the nightstands!
We have two of them and they were a little rough when we picked them up but we loved the style of them!

The drawers were also kind of rough but again in great condition otherwise!

My amazing husband helping sand the nightstands down a little so that the paint would stick. It did not take much to get them sanded enough just to get the paint to stick. At first we thought we would need to really sand them down but the realized that with the color we were going to paint them, we would not need to really sand them down.

After sanding them down, we painted them black. (The same color as the chairs.) Gotta love having extra paint left over from other projects.

Then came the drawers! This is only three of the four drawers that we painted. We could not go with normal subdued or even black drawers. We just had to have bright colored drawers.

The knobs also needed to be repainted. What better color to use than a bright red?!

Tj’s finished nightstand! Love the colors!

My finished nightstand!
They kind of look like they should be in a kid’s room but honestly they look great with the rest of the bedroom. And I mean why subdue things when you love the bright colors of the world!

Ok, so the style of our bedroom and our living area is definitely a bit different. Lol!
First, the finished chairs around the dining room table. They still need the fabric on the chairs and the table needs re-stained but other wise it still looks great!
I think it looks really nice, even with the horrible red vinyl. It will be remedied soon. I promise to post pictures of them actually finished.
Now, to see the new TV Stand/desk.

We found this awesome piece at our local thrift store for $50. Crazy right?! It is in excellent condition! It has a Gregorian feel and it just a lovely piece. Definitely something that could be passed on from generation to the next generation.

It also doubles as a desk! So great! Not only does it serve as a wonderful place for the TV but it also has a great about of storage that clears up some of the clutter that we had about the house.

Now, we found these awesome chairs for $10 a piece at another local thrift store. I mean seriously, great condition, great color! They look fantastic with the TV stand. We actually have a style going in our living room now! How about that?!

That means where did all our books go?
We had some extra space under our kitchen counter that sticks out a bit over by the gear closet and so we facilitated that space with bookshelves. I know it is not the most stunning display of our books but it is practical right now and fits exactly in the way we needed it to!

So, everything is falling into place in regards to decorations and such. Just waiting for our schedules to fill out more and money to start coming in a little more regularly until we continue furnishing our apartment. Otherwise, it is all coming together. I love building a home!

Well, I am off to continue sanding our table and reading and knitting!

See ya!

Thrift Store Finds and Still Waiting

One thing I love about the area I live in at the moment is that there are a ton of Thrift stores close-by. I love thrift stores and have found some of my favorite things in thrift stores. These thrift stores have yet to disappoint. I have found items that I have needed in order to de-clutter my home, and books to read, and another special item I can’t wait to show you!

This little gem just popped up and grabbed my eye while I was browsing. I had been looking for something cute to hold our q-tips because otherwise they were just sitting in a baggie on the counter and that was most definitely not cute at all. So, I found this adorable little mason jar for 60 cents. Can’t go wrong with that. I might make it a little more colorful with some water color paints or I might just leave it. Thoughts?

I am a sucker for reading. (Check out my previous post about my One Year Reading Challenge starting next week!) I read all the time. I spent all day yesterday just reading The Lovely Bones (pictured above) and The Hunger Games at B&N. I spent less than $10 on these two books combined. I love love love to read and I love finding good books for cheap too!

This beauty has to be my favorite item I have found at the thrift stores so far. I had been looking at bowls like this for several months now. I was waiting to get one because they are like $30 and I just thought it was going to be a little pointless with all these other expenses coming our way as we were moving and such. But anyway, on Monday I’m walking around the thrift store closest to my house, just keeping busy so I don’t get too bored and I see this super cute bowl and pick it up. I have no idea what I am going to do with it yet but I hold onto it so no one will take it. As I’m walking around and fiddling with the little handle you see there, I realize, this would be the perfect yarn bowl! When I’m knitting, I have my yarn rolled into a ball and it just tends to roll all over the place sometimes but is still more manageable than the cylinder type shape it comes in. So, I had seen this kind of a bowl and was like ‘I want one but I don’t wanna pay that much yet.’ Here is my solution! I paid $1.50 for this bowl and it works perfectly! I am absolutely in love with it!

Among going to Thrift stores and getting my hair cut, I spent last week doing a little DIY project.
My new chairs looked like they belonged in a restaurant. I mean they were the light wood color with red vinyl seats. It just screamed family restaurant seating. Definitely not my style exactly. But, I knew it would not be hard to repaint them and reupholster them. So, I start the first half of this makeover. I took these chairs, I sanded them slightly so that the paint had something to stick to and then I took a nice dark grey/almost black color and painted them to my hearts content. It took several coats to fully mask the wood but the finished paint project is awesome!

I love the darker color! It already looks ten times better and I have not even done the new fabric yet. I am still on the look-out for the right fabric so that will be done later. I am also going to re-stain my table to a darker shade so that it goes with the chairs a little better. However, that is another time as well. Any thoughts on if I should go with fabric or stick with a more vinyl kind of fabric for the chairs?

Anyway, I have not yet started work. They are having issues with the computer system getting me in but hopefully I can get in sometime this week. I am going a little stir-crazy but I have plenty to keep me busy at the moment.
Well I’m off to keep working on stuff around the house and reading!
See ya!

Update on the Goings On In the Parnell Household

So much and yet not so much has been happening in the Parnell household this week. TJ started working in the store on Monday. He is loving it already. He is a natural born salesman especially when it comes to products that he loves and uses as it is. He loves being able to just talk with people and not be standing in one place all night long. It is so nice to see him significantly happier here than he was at the Distribution Center. There are also more people here with a firm belief in Christ and a desire for Outdoor Ministry, which is also making him that much more happy.

I start this coming Tuesday hopefully. The lady that can put me in the system is on vacation and so I can’t be hired until she gets back and can put me in the system. Crazy huh? Oh well, it is giving me another week to make this place home, to knit, to read, and to keep working on that rug. The Lord is providing and guiding and so I am not worried at all.

I know I mentioned several weeks ago that I was going to start reading 52 books from July 1, 2012 – July 1, 2013. Well, that obviously did not start yet. I was not thinking originally and did not realize that that would be the time when I was getting ready to move and moving across the country. So, I changed the dates a little bit and decided to move it up to August 1, 2012-August 1, 2013. That way I can continue compiling my list and can finish getting things put together around the apartment and what not. So, again if there is any suggestions you have in regards to what I should read, please give me some suggestions. If you want to know more about the new challenge and section or what kind of books I am looking to read check out the original post here.

So, anyway, TJ is home and I am off to spend my evening with him.
See ya!

Starting Week #2

Here they are. They need a little bit of work. I want to make the table a darker stain and then paint and possibly reupholster the chairs too. I am looking forward to having fun with this set and make it my own and look classier.

Yesterday I went to Fancy Tiger Crafts in downtown Denver. It is a knitting/crocheting/sewing store. They also have their own clothing store right next door. I found two beautiful recycled glass buttons for my coffee cozy. They look great together! I also got a jelly thimble, because my finger has been getting rough housed with my sewing adventure (to be explained next). I was also drooling over all of their yarn! They sell all organic yarn and are super supportive of small businesses that sell yarn. Love it! I bought two half baby alpaca and half silk skeins of yarn. I am working on the pattern of how I want to use it currently. Will post more details of it later!

I have also started a sewing adventure in the last week. When I am not unpacking or rearranging, I have decided to make a rug!

I had a bucket of old t-shirts that I was never going to wear again along with other fabric scraps. I was trying to figure out what in the world I was going to do with them. I was thinking I could really use a rug for the bathroom floor and that is when I remembered my box of old t-shirts. I had seen so many rugs made out of t-shirt scraps that I just knew I had to give it a whirl. So, I spent two nights cutting up all of my t-shirts into scraps. Yay!
Then I started braiding them.

Those are about 10 inches long. But they were not quite long enough so i just braided in more strips. I have about three rows done and sewn together. Will keep you updated on the progress and show you the finished product later. 🙂

Anyway, there you go!

See ya!

Packing, Packing, and More Packing

This past week or so has been so super busy. I have just been packing anything and everything into boxes. I have been cleaning. (You should see my bathroom, it has never looked this clean.) I just keep scrubbing and packing. I took down all of our posters off the walls yesterday, and I am telling you, our apartment is looking super sparse. It hardly feels like our apartment now. Just wow. I have almost everything packed except for the stuff that we use everyday.

Today, I was on the lookout for a cosmetic bag. I have been dragging all of my shampoo, conditioner, and other everyday necessities in ziploc bags. Needless to say, not very classy. Not very womanly at all. So, i was on the hunt for something to carry my items around. I did not want something too boring pattern-wise and also not something too small. I finally came across this one that is perfect for exactly what I am in need of.
Definitely looks more adult like, without going overboard. Something simple and cheap and exactly perfect for my uses. Yay!

However, on the search around town for a cosmetic bag, I found these awesome fake birkenstocks. I love the look of these shoes and I love how comfortable they are. However, on a newly married budget, birkenstocks can be a little pricey. But when you find a fake pair that are just as comfortable for less than $15 at Ross, I say DIBS! I snagged them up and have not taken them off since I bought them. So comfy!
 Yay shoes!

I also finished up knitting my coffee cozy! I just have to get some awesome (organic) wooden buttons, and maybe we will put up a post on Etsy? First store posting? I just might do that. Do you like coffee cozys so that your hands don’t get burnt by how hot the coffee is?
Finished knit project, not so great picture, but better ones will come later. Must find buttons! Any suggestions?

Well, I am off to more cleaning and packing.
Look how many boxes and how empty my apartment is getting!
So many boxes, and so much cleaning!!! And yet so much more to do! Wow!

I’m off to keep working!
See ya!

It is a little DIY time!

Ok, so today I have not done too much reading in my book. I read a little bit but honestly like 2 pages. So, nothing new to report on that front.

Faelyn yesterday ate 3 chicken bones (we had drumsticks the night before and he decided to dig through the trash while TJ and I were on our lunch date. What a loser. Anyway, that resulted in him frantically jumping on the bed earlyish this morning and begging us to take him outside to go potty. He has had the runs all day. I told him that is what he gets for eating three chicken bones in the span of an hour.

But anyway, I got up and went and got a haircut this morning. When I got I worked on some student loan stuff and transcript stuff. After TJ went to work, I had some errands to run that took up most of my afternoon. I had a raging headache by that time. But I got something from goodwill that I had DIY intentions for so I was too excited not to try it out. Thankfully it did not take much effort. I am a pinterest-oholic. My hubby can attest to this. I love to surf through pins and boards and find stuff that I would like to try at some point. I get lost for hours sometimes. Well I saw this pin that said you could write or draw on a ceramic coffee mug or plate or what have you, bake in the over for a half hour and then it would be permanent. Well, I just love coffee mugs. I mean I have a collection! Luckily, there was a plain white mug at Goodwill today and I just snatched it right up. It cost me a grand total of 63 cents. Yay!

So, the next step was figuring out what in the world I wanted to put on it. I wanted to put words on it, but what quote I wanted was hard to decide. I finally came across a quote that I was determined to put on it. You know, the Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly had just some of the best lines. Mr. Darcy was just making all of us swoon with his one- liners don’t you agree? So the quote I chose was “You have bewitched me, body and soul.” That is how I feel most of the time about my hubby. (we all have those days where are loved ones drive us nuts.)

So, I took my blank mug.

I figured out what I wanted to write and in what kind of script and started.

I can’t just leave it at the writing. I had to add some embellishments. (You should’ve seen the notes I took in college or more like the pictures I drew during class. )

Then I took my finished drawings and put my mug in the oven at 350 degrees for half an hour.

I worked on my Epic Blanket of Insanity blanket while I wanted for my mug to be done.
And here is the result! Yay new mug!

So, while fighting a horrid headache, you can still have a little effortless fun making your mug!
You should try it out!

See ya!

Or if you have great suggestions that don’t fall into those categories, I would love to hear those too!
Those just tend to be what I am inclined to lately, but I would love any suggestions!
I am going to put up another page starting July 1st of my reading list (or what I have compiled already) and then after I finish each book I will post my thoughts and maybe even challenges that I got from the book!

Soakin’ Up the Sunshine

Well hello hello,

When I left you last I was getting ready to go on a vacation with my hubby and my in-laws to the wonderful Outer Banks, NC. I said that I was going to post while I was there, but to be honest, I was having so much fun and just enjoying being away from my everyday life that I kind of forgot and kind of just decided I would post when I get back.

It was just a wonderful vacation! TJ and I both desperately needed it before this huge move coming up in just over three weeks. We needed to take that deep breath before the plunge. It was great! We both feel extremely refreshed personally, as well as in our relationship with each other, and our relationship with our Maker too. We had both just gotten so tired lately that we hadn’t had time to focus on us and the things that we loved about each other and we also got time to focus on how amazing The Creator is as we watched the huge waves and the clouds and the rain and the lightning and the thunderstorms. Seriously, it was an amazing week!

However, a week is a long time and a lot happened in that week! So, we have a lot to catch up on here. Let’s dive in and see!

We got there in the afternoon on Sunday. It was a gorgeous day! We got to the house, got settled into our rooms. Our room had this huge bathtub. We currently do not have a bathtub and I love taking baths so seeing this huge tub just made my day already. Haha! After taking a nice leisurely soak, TJ and I decided to head down to the beach before dinner. We love the OBX and it was just so relaxing to listen to the waves and hold hands with my hubby as we walked along the beach. We thought it would be cute to take a picture with our backs to the waves. Well, the first one did not turn out so well.

Since we wanted our backs to the waves, that meant that the sun was in our face. I was definitely not enjoying that lol.
The second picture on the other hand was much better!

I somehow managed to suck it up long enough to get a decent picture! Yay!

The rest of the night was spent eating dinner and enjoying a relaxing evening at the house! It was just beautiful there!
I spent some time relaxing by the pool in the backyard!

Monday was our 1 year anniversary. We got to spend our 1 year in our honeymoon location and we were just thrilled about that! We went out for lunch at our favorite local Italian place right across the street from where we were staying. We both had the Italian Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich. Oh My Word! That was seriously one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. It has some pesto along with the normal chicken cordon bleu and it was all on their homemade ciabatta bread. So delicious!
We thought this would be another perfect picture opportunity.

I got a new dress a Kohl’s just for our lunch, and it ended up being perfect for other days at the beach too lol. You also get a glimpse of the blonde on one of the sides of my head. It is on both sides and the neckline too. I had to pull my bangs back because otherwise, with the wind at the beach and the top down on the jeep they were getting blown all over the place and sticking up in strange positions.

We spent the afternoon shopping around the little shops right there by the restaurant. We have this favorite little shop called “Try My Nutz”. They have all kinds of flavored peanuts, cashews, pecans, etc. I got the Butta Toasted Cashews. So delicious! We went into this one jewelry shop called The Mystic Jewel and they had this one sterling silver starfish ring that was just stunning. I loved it! But it was a little bit more than I usually pay for jewelry (usually no more than $10-$15) and so I decided to hold off and think about if I really wanted to get it. Well, we went back on Friday and it was gone. Someone had bought the last one at that store. I was told to go check the store in Duck because they might have one. I went back to the house a little sad but knew it happened. On our way out on Saturday morning, TJ persuaded me to stop at the Duck store and there it was, the last one they had! I made sure it fit and bought it right then and there. I love this ring!

Tuesday brought a cold rain into Corolla, which meant I did not want to go swimming in the ocean. The rest of the gang did not really want to go out into the ocean very much either. TJ and I thought it would be fun to take everyone up 4×4 country and see where we stayed for our honeymoon last year. It is about 11 miles up the beach road. It takes a good bit of time to get up there. The road is not smooth either, it is sand and that means bumps and sometimes splashes if you get a little close to the water. Even though it was rainy, it was just beautiful!

After coming back to Corolla, we headed on down to the outlets where we hung around for a while before dinner at Big Al’s. It was a nice relaxing chill day as we waited for the storm to roll through.

Wednesday was super cold because of the rain the previous day. There was no way I was getting in the water. It was freezing. So instead I built a sand jellyfish. I completely forgot to take pictures but it was pretty awesome not gonna lie. TJ built Delm’s Heep. It was not quite as grand as Helm’s Deep so he switched some letters around to make it his own lol.

Thursday finally brought some warmth! The water was getting warmer but still not enough that I wanted to get all the way in. Plus the waves were just huge. Dad came in and said that the waves were just knocking him about. This provided a nice opportunity to work on my chaco tan and my overall tan while reading, my favorite beach pastime. I definitely did not want to lay out in my chacos that much but if you are a true Chaco wearer, you must have a chaco tan and it is super hard for me to get a chaco tan unless I am super diligent about it because I just don’t tan so I gave in and laid out with shoes on.

Friday was awesome! It brought warm weather, warm water, and not so big waves! Yay! This is what I like when it comes to getting in the water. I got all the out and got soaked and had a blast playing in the waves. I finished reading my book and over all it was just a great last day at the beach. I could not have asked for a better ending to a much needed wonderful vacation.

After all my laying out, I finally have a visible Chaco tan! It took all week to get to this point but I got it!

Saturday was our travel day. I had one last stop (after the Mystic Jewel of course) that I wanted to make before we left the OBX. I had seen a store called The Knitting Addiction when we went to the outlets the other day. I did not have the opportunity to stop then so I had to stop on our way out of town. Oh My Word! It was just awesome!  So many different types of yarn and patterns and all kinds of other awesome doo-dads. I was in knitting heaven seriously! I only bought two 100% cotton skeins. But after finishing my friend’s dish cloths, it did not take me long to get those skeins onto my needles and into my Epic Blanket of Insanity. Here are the two skeins and the dish cloths.

A nice blue/purple multi-color. 🙂

And a nice bright multi-color that went right into the blanket right away! 🙂

Here are the finished dish cloths for my friend! She is great for helping support us move across the country! Take a look at my Help Us Move! page if you would like to help support us in our move to Colorado!

We had a great vacation! We both realized we would have no problem living and Lord willing maybe someday we will live there! Who knows? It was nice to enjoy the Atlantic Coast one last time for a while.

See ya!
