I can’t believe that the shortest month of the year has already started AND that we are already four days into it!!! How crazy is that?! I feel like sometimes life just goes by so quickly. It was two months ago that I said I was going to try and take the month of December a little slower and enjoy the holidays. We all know how that turned out. Although life is going by super quick as it usually does, I have been taking time to enjoy things over the past month or so. After reading The Happiness Project (I know, I know I really should stop talking about it. ) I really wanted to change things to enjoy life a little more. Some small, some daily, some a little more daring, but mostly just being able to say no.
I realized I was saying yes to things that I did not particularly enjoy or things that really did me no good. In January, our membership to the rock climbing gym expired. We decided to let it expire. We did not want to renew because we realized we weren’t using it. At first, we were both really torn. We felt like we should renew but we did not really want to. After it expired, we had a little money to ski. That monthly membership fee was no longer coming out and that freed up a little bit of play money. Then we found out we had free skiing at a mountain not too far. Oh man, we have gone skiing at least once a week for the past month. Amazing! It was such a great decision. Not only am I happier but I am getting out more and being way more active than I was with the gym membership. So that being sad, we will be social rock climbers but it is not something that we are desperately pushing for. I said no to something that was just nagging at my brain and said yes to my favorite activity ever! So much happier!
I also started saying no to so many sweets and sodas. I love soda. It really is a weakness for me. One of the resolutions I made this year was to avoid soda 3 times a week. I thought to myself, this should be a piece of cake. No way. I did not realize how much I love soda until I started cutting it out of my diet. This has been the hardest resolution for me to keep. There have been times when all I want is to drink a soda! But I am in week 4 of my resolutions and so far so good! I have managed to avoid soda twice this week so only one more day and its only Tuesday! I know it may not seem like a lofty goal but I find it better to start small and incorporate it into life that try and go cold turkey because then I just get frustrated.
Another thing that I gleaned from the book that shall not be named is she did resolutions each month. She focused on an area each month and worked on it. I have decided to attempt that for February as least. I don’t know if it will continue into the rest of the months but this month it will happen. The rooms that I live in day in and day out tend to get really cluttered and messy. That is only 5 rooms (not counting the basement or Matt’s room) that I need to focus on. I want to de-clutter this place. I want to focus on eliminating items that I don’t use or use up items I forget about and buy something similar in place of. I want less things to end up cluttering up my bedroom floor and to be able to breathe easy after a brief clean-up at the end of the day. So, February is de-clutter month in the Parnell household. I am sure you will hear about my victories and failures throughout or at least at the end.
Anyway, off to look for a car!
I started following a local blogger here in Denver back in about April or so before we moved to Denver just to kind of get an idea of some of the awesome things to do and see in the Denver area. She posted about the Rackhouse Pub back in May and I thought that sounded delicious.
Well, I must say her post completely did the restaurant justice. We went rock climbing with some friends at a local gym and then we were hungry afterward so we decided to grab a drink and some food. Rackhouse pub at Stranahan’s Distillery was the place that was decided on for our food ventures.
It was amazing! I got a pizza and ended up finishing it except for one slice that TJ ate. TJ got the Daybreak burger, which is a burger with corned beef, bacon, cheese, a fried egg, onion and tomato. His side was the molasses baked beans. Oh my goodness, anyone who comes to visit must indeed try this awesomeness! I had a Milk stout with my pizza. Dude, so yummy!
It also had just a classy/chill atmosphere as well. Dimish lights. But not too dim to where you can’t hardly tell what you are eating! Leather booths and dark tables. It was awesome! OOOOO one of the super cool things was, they were playing a silent movie on their TV screens and yet still had some chill music playing quietly in the background. Such a great atmosphere.
The waiter was great. Left us be when we got our food. Very polite and yet super chill so that it didn’t frustrate him when we switched tables when we got a bigger group.
It was a great dinner and a nice time to just relax and hang out with awesome friends.
Check it out if you haven’t already!
Sorry I forgot to take pictures…..
I have really just been enjoying spending time with my little man. He is super confused with all the boxes and me scrubbing things down and just making this place back to what it was when we moved in but he has stayed fairly close to my side as I have been preparing for this move and I love that. Yesterday, we went rock climbing with a friend. (One of the last times we will get to here in PA.) We took Faelyn with us. He loved it! He was born to be on the trail with us. But, that left him super exhausted when we got home yesterday and I am pretty sure he is still catching up on some sleep today. He is the cutest thing when he sleeps. I thought I would show you so it could bring a smile to your face like it is bringing a smile to mine.
He goes from curled up like this, to…
…completely stretched out like this several times during his sleep cycle.
I would have to say it is one of the cutest things ever!
This past weekend was my birthday weekend! It was on Friday and my hubby had the whole day planned out. He is amazing! First he let me sleep in, which was much appreciated.
Then we made our way to Pittsburgh. I love the city of Pittsburgh. If we were not moving to Denver here in just over two weeks, I would make us move closer to Pittsburgh. First of all, it is just a great city and it is really beautiful if you like slightly run down but making a come back kind of places. But anyway, we went to Pittsburgh to go to our favorite climbing gym. It has this massive bouldering area which is exactly the type of climbing that we love. We spent several hours in there just climbing to our hearts content. We definitely realized that we are not nearly as good of climbers as we thought. I mean we knew we were not great but I at least felt like I could be better. We are hoping that once we move to Denver, we can find a great gym to get involved in. We want to climb on a much more regular basis.
After we were exhausted enough from climbing, we went closer to the heart of Pittsburgh and hit up the REI store and Cheesecake factory there. I could not help but being giddy while I was walking through REI because I know that I will be working there in three weeks! So excited! Just knowing that I will be working in an environment that I actually like and knowing that I get those pro deals just makes me super super excited!
Then we hit up the Cheesecake Factory. MMMMMMM That place has delicious food. I had their chicken parm sandwich. So yummy! Yay! Then I had the Adam’s Peanut Butter Cup Fudge Ripple cheesecake. Dude, it has butterfingers and reese’s in it. What is there not to love about that cheesecake?!
After that, he surprised me with a trip to the Drive-in to see Madagascar 3 and Snow White and the Huntsman. Oh my word. So awesome! I love the drive-in and he could not have picked a better ending to the night! Both movies were awesome!
Overall, I could not have had a better Birthday date day with my hubby! That led in to the rest of the weekend which was work work work work.
Well, I am off to eat and continue packing up my house! Yay moving!
This weekend my littlest sister turned 9 years old!!! It is so hard to believe that she is growing up this fast. I feel like just yesterday she was super tiny. Anyway, I was not able to be home for her birthday, but I was up the week before so I gave her a present then. I gave her a call on her birthday and as is to be expected she was all kinds of goofy and slightly hyper because it was her birthday. She says I call her crazy all the time but it is because she makes some ridiculous comments on a regular basis. She is basically a mini me except most of the time she does not have any inhibitions like I do. She isn’t afraid to be herself and I love that about her. I know she is only 9 and still has to go through high school, but I have a feeling she will keep her individual identity. I love her to pieces!
In other weekend news, I had the day off on Friday and we went climbing! That was wonderful and yet totally made us realize how much we sucked after not climbing for a while. Saturday, I was not feeling good at all so I ended up calling off of work. I had a killer migraine plus snot was my best friend. I think it was my body telling me I needed to just chill out and take a break because I have just been going going going for weeks. Graduation here I come! Sunday, I felt better so that two day break must’ve been just what I needed. Overall, not a half bad weekend. But here we are, off to another week.
How ironic is it that the day we are supposed to blog about R is the day my husband and his friends plan for us to go rock climbing? Haha!
Today was the first time we have been rock climbing in a while. It had just been so cold and I am not a cold weather climber unless it is in a gym that is warmer. But anyway, that is beside the point. Today, was so good to get out and rock climb. I meant to take more pictures, but I just had too much fun climbing and enjoying the fresh spring air. I took a couple and will show you those pictures first and then I will post some other pictures from previous rock climbing expeditions. I realized just how long it had been since I had rock climbed. My fingers were definitely not wanting to hold me to the wall today. Haha! Time to get back out there and climb more so that I can get my strength back up. Waitressing definitely keeps the strength up in my arms and hands but not my fingers.
Here are the pictures from today!
Faelyn heard turkeys down in the valley and was ready to go hunt them down. Haha! He was perched up there for about ten minutes just listening and ready to pounce.
TJ carrying the crash pads with the dog almost pulling him down the hill. They were both super happy to be out and are now both pooped after running around.
This is at one of our favorite climbing places at school. It used to be an old rail road bridge. But the bridge became too unstable for a train to go across and so they moved it over and the old pillars still stand and are owned by the Lynchburg Climbing Club. It is just wonderful and so much fun to climb. On this one we definitely use rope.
This was just a couple of months ago and the place we were at today, Hunter Rocks. We do not use rope here because the rocks are not very high and so landing on crash pads are all that is necessary to break our fall. We love bouldering.
Time to go shower off and get ready to go out for dinner with my hubby!
I think one word that I would use to describe TJ and I’s relationship is goofballs. We are not strangers to having fun and being goofy. We are best friends most of the time before we are lovers or spouses. Here are just a couple pictures to show our goofy side.
This is just after smooshing cake in each other’s faces at our reception. (My idea)
Words do not even exist to describe this.
We thought it would be awesome to be on the rockwall together and then realized how goofy we looking too. It was super funny!
This was our trip to DisneyWorld with Tj’s family in January 2011. We had to pose with the guys from the Incredibles. It was necessary lol.
I think this gives a pretty clear picture that we love to have fun and goof around. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As women we are always looking for some new way to lose weight. We want to find out the trick to staying thin and young looking. This is definitely not a bad thing. However, when we start depriving our bodies of certain things or pursuing a lifestyle that is drastically different than our own that is when it starts to get our of hand and starts backfiring.
I have tried a variety of different exercise routines and cutting out certain foods but honestly I have just been miserable and hated whatever I was doing or not doing. It never stuck with me. I started looking around for something else to do, or something else to eat, or something else to exercise with. Nothing was really working because I would do it for a little bit and then I would just hate it so much that I would give up because I did not want to keep this up. I hate running, I love sweets, and I love soda among many other things but those are my top three reasons for my way of life.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I think being healthy and strong is a good thing. It helps prevent health problems as you get older. It helps you with more energy and such. The key to being healthy and strong is that it has to integrate into your current lifestyle. A lifestyle change does not happen overnight. It happens little by little. I have tried to completely cut out sweets or soda over night but it was horrible. I couldn’t take it. I have learned that honestly, I just need to cut back not out. I think about what I am eating. I love good food. I love trying new recipes and restaurants. I love new desserts especially! (My pinterest is full of desserts to try!) I just look at when I am going to behave and be naughty and do my best to even it out.
I also found something that would keep me active, that I enjoyed! I love rock climbing. I love the strategy and the problem solving and the relatively low impact that comes with rock climbing. It is seriously the best!
So, I do not recommend dieting to anyone! I say, make the healthy changes in your life little by little. It will stick longer and you will enjoy the journey more!
Speaking or eating, I’m hungry….
Well, today is the third day of the April A-Z Challenge and I am continuing to keep with the lettters and my awesome product to talk about today is crashpads. They are very essential in my life especially during the warmer months. They are big squishy pieces of foam that are put at the bottom of a rock wall and if you wall when you are bouldering (climbing on a smaller surface without ropes) then that piece of foam is there to break your fall instead of the hard ground. It is super important to make sure those crash pads are placed under the climber because if they are not, then there could be serious injury to the climber.
I rock climb outside in the warmer months and in a gym when I can in the colder months. I love it, it helps me stay strong and lean (which is not two words I would use to describe myself this winter) and it is just fun. My husband is the one who got me into rock climbing when we were dating and it has stuck ever since.
If I am climbing in a gym or with other friends who bring their own crashpads, I will use whatever they bring but the ones that we prefer to use is from a company called Organic. They are a local company here in Central PA. (Side Note: It is great to support local companies when you can instead of just always going with a brand name big company.) We have become friends with the owner and we honestly just love the quality of their crashpads. If you have not heard of them or just want to take a look at their awesome colors on their custom made crash pads, check them out here.
